John Hillman and Astrid IQ

SEO and GEO Strategist · Independent consultant · Active in search since 2009

We’ve spent sixteen years helping ambitious organisations win in organic search. Astrid IQ was founded to do that work properly — with a small number of clients, at a senior level, without the overhead and account management layers of a traditional agency.

“I’ve worked with John Hillman at Astrid IQ for 10 years, maybe more. He’s a great SEO consultant – I’ve referred people to him who have been really pleased with what he’s done. And will happily refer more people too.”

– Chris Reed, CEO, Restless Communications

My background

About Astrid IQ

I started in search in 2009 as Content Manager at NMPi (now Incubeta), one of the UK’s leading search agencies, and was promoted to Head of Content within a year.

In 2013 I founded Astrid IQ and began lecturing in Digital Storytelling at City University London. The following year I took on the SEO lead role at Universal Music’s Spinnup platform, helping grow it to 11 million annual page views across seven countries and playing a small part in the discovery of multiple multi-platinum artists.

Since then I’ve built a consultancy working with organisations across sport, banking, SaaS and travel — including Lords Cricket Ground, Gearset, TransferGo and major UK banks.

I have completed the LSE Digital Marketing Strategy and Analytics programme alongside my first GEO transformation project for a regulated UK bank.

Outside work I host Travels Through Time — a history podcast featured in the Guardian, The Times and the Evening Standard — and I spend too much time in the cold English sea.

Brand Experience

Why I work the way I do

Why a small roster?

Most agencies grow by adding clients. I’ve chosen to grow by going deeper. Working with around ten clients at a time means I can give each one the kind of attention that actually moves things. I know your sector, your competitors, your internal constraints and your commercial goals — not because I’ve read a briefing document, but because I’ve been working alongside you long enough to understand them properly.

When you work with Astrid IQ, you work with me. Not a team I’m managing, not a junior assigned to your account. Me.

Why SEO and GEO together?

Search is in the middle of its most significant structural shift since mobile overtook desktop. AI-generated answers are reducing click-through rates on traditional results. Large language models are becoming the first port of call for research-led buying decisions.

I think about both of these things together, because your buyers experience them that way. A strategy that optimises for one while ignoring the other is already incomplete.

LSE Digital Marketing Strategy and Analytics (2025-2026)

2025-2026

The programme covers digital strategy at a leadership level — channel integration, data-driven decision making, attribution frameworks, analytics architecture and growth marketing. Built around real business problems, not theoretical models.

Sixteen years of practice teaches you what works. The LSE programme provided a more rigorous language for explaining why it works — and a framework for thinking about the marketing data questions that have become increasingly central to what clients need today.
